The Individualized Program:

The Individualized Program offers students the opportunity to develop personal strengths and professional competencies in Whole Systems Design useful in a wide variety of contexts. In close relationship with their faculty advisor and working within program requirements, students set their own focus, selecting learning activities that support both their particular interests and the WSD design process. Students are invited to design their own unique learning program as a way to experientially learn design skills.

Features of the Individualized Program in Whole Systems Design include:

  • A flexible academic timeline, tailored to students' individual needs.
  • The opportunity to design one's own academic schedule through selecting courses from the WSD Individualized Program, other academic departments at Antioch, and even other universities, as well as engaging in independent study, learning cells, and practicums designed by the student for his or her specific needs.
  • Interaction with a variety of fellow students in an assortment of learning settings including a set of core courses that offer a foundation in design and systems, and help build community among students in the entering class.
  • Highly accessible core faculty members deeply committed to student learning.
  • A Degree Process based on a design process engaging students in experiential learning, self-exploration, and professional development.
  • A Degree Committee made up of a core faculty member, field advisors from the community, and a peer scribe, all of whom support the student in his or her degree process.
  • Integration of rigorous classroom learning with life experience and work.
  • A Graduate Project in which students do an original piece of holistic, systemic designing and implement it in the world community.
  • An emphasis on ethics, aesthetics, and social responsibility as an integral part of academic competence in Whole Systems Design.
